Kitsilano Yacht Club offers lessons for all ages and levels of experience, in a relaxed and fun environment. Following the Canadian Yachting Association-approved programs, our certified instructors focus on giving our students maximum time on the water instead of stuck in a classroom. CYA levels are standardized across Canada and offer some of the best instruction in the world. Our classes are taught in small groups using double and single handed dinghies such as Pirates, Lasers and Laser2s. Since we are located right on the beach next to the Kits pool, there are plenty of opportunities to learn how to beach your boat and enjoy the great atmosphere of Vancouver’s summer! We offer both Adult Programs and Youth Programs
What to Bring? Dinghy sailing tends to involve getting wet every time you get in the boat. Two mandatory items to bring to every class are a PFD/lifejacket and shoes or sandals to wear in the water. Please bring weather-appropriate clothing, a change of clothes and a towel for afterwards, plus sun and wind protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, windbreaker, fleece, etc.). Remember, even on the sunniest day it can be chilly out on the water, and the sun reflects off the water to speed up the time it takes to burn. A water bottle and lunch (for full day programs) are also necessary.
Course Descriptions
Kits Sail This one week, non-certification course is designed to give sailors an introduction to sailing, extra the time on the water to improve skills, or just the chance to have fun sailing around English Bay.
White Sail I, II and III The White Sail levels cover the basics of sailing, including knots, safety, points of sail, terminology and crewing / skippering skills. Sailors become comfortable sailing upwind, downwind and docking or beaching their boats. We invite all our students who complete White Sail III to sign up for our Dinghy Pass which gives them access to our boats throughout the summer season.
Bronze IV and V Bronze Sail emphasizes advanced sailing skills such as trapezing and spinnakering, while improving on the basics learned in White Sail. The Bronze Sail levels also provide an introduction to advanced sail theory and all the other fundamentals necessary for racing or cruising.
Silver VI Designed for those interested in speed, Silver sailors get an introduction to racing techniques, rules and strategies. Silver VI also provides the opportunity to build on the advanced sailing skills learned in Bronze. Silver finishes off all the necessary instruction to be a great sailor in any kind of boat.
Youth Programs - For ages 8 to 18, as of December 31st, 2008
